CoVince - VR Gym Class
Devlopment of a Virtual Reality providing a sport students an environment to practice teaching a class during covid.
Year :
2021
Industry :
VR Development
Client :
ROC van Amsterdam
Project Duration :
3 months

Problem :
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, educational institutions faced unprecedented challenges as physical campuses closed. At the ROC (regional training center), sports science students were suddenly unable to access gymnasiums. This completely disrupted their curriculum, as they could not fulfill their core requirement: practicing how to lead, manage, and instruct physical education classes in a realistic environment.

Solution :
During my Software Development internship at CoVince—a Virtual Reality startup platform—I worked within a close-knit, dedicated team to build a solution. We developed a fully immersive VR gymnasium simulation tailored for ROC sports students. This digital environment allowed students to step into a realistic gym from their own homes, enabling them to practice teaching techniques, organize virtual class layouts, and maintain their practical skills despite lockdowns.

Challenge :
This project came with both technical and professional challenges. On a technical level, we had to optimize a complex 3D gym environment to ensure it ran smoothly as a realistic simulation. Organizationally, this internship took place during prime COVID-11, meaning it was 100% remote. I had to quickly adapt to working within a large, international company with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds, requiring flawless communication and agile collaboration across different time zones.
Summary :
As a Software Development intern, this project allowed me to leverage VR technology to solve a critical, real-world educational crisis. Working remotely within an international startup taught me how to collaborate effectively under unique circumstances. Ultimately, our team successfully delivered a high-quality VR simulation that empowered ROC sports students to continue their education and graduate on time, proving the immense value of immersive technology in remote learning.
