Escape from Tarkov inspired minigame and cognitive test

Problem :

This project was part of the Introduction to Programming course, where the objective was to design and develop a simple browser-based game using JavaScript. The focus was on building a foundational understanding of programming logic, event handling, and interactive systems.

The main challenge was to create a game that was both technically feasible and engaging, while applying core programming concepts such as randomness, feedback, and difficulty balancing.

Solution :

As a competitive first-person shooter player, I designed an aim-training game that tests reflexes, reaction speed, and hand–eye coordination. The concept was inspired by human benchmark tests and skill-training tools used by FPS players.

To increase engagement and familiarity, I developed the game with a visual style inspired by Escape from Tarkov. The gameplay focused on rapid target recognition and interaction, encouraging players to improve their performance through repetition and feedback.

I implemented core systems such as randomized target positioning within a canvas, a simple health and scoring system, and progressive difficulty. Sound effects were added to strengthen feedback and create a more immersive and responsive experience.

Challenge :

The biggest challenge was learning how to structure logic and interactivity from scratch. Designing a responsive and fair difficulty system required experimentation and iteration to maintain player motivation without causing frustration.

Another challenge was balancing simplicity and engagement. Since the project scope was limited, I focused on refining core mechanics rather than adding unnecessary features. This reinforced the importance of strong fundamentals and clear feedback in interactive experiences.

Summary :

This project strengthened my understanding of JavaScript fundamentals, interactive systems, and feedback loops. I gained hands-on experience with randomness, game logic, and difficulty balancing.

Most importantly, it helped me connect programming with user experience, showing how small interaction details—such as feedback, pacing, and challenge—can influence behaviour and engagement. These insights continue to inform my approach to UX and behaviour-driven design.
