De Boeken Zoeker

A library app for the Municipality of Amsterdam

Year :

Industry :

Visual Interface Design

Client :

HvA

Project Duration :

2022

Problem :

This project was part of the Visual Interface Design course and focused on designing a digital library experience for tablet screens located in the Youth Library of the City of Amsterdam. The goal was to create an engaging and accessible interface that would motivate young users to explore and discover books independently.

A key challenge was designing for a public environment with a diverse audience, including children with different levels of digital literacy. The interface needed to be intuitive, fast, and visually appealing, while also supporting exploration without overwhelming users. In addition, the project required the integration of a meaningful micro-interaction to enhance feedback and usability.

Solution :

I designed a vibrant and uncluttered interface that aligned with the professional visual identity of Amsterdam. The concept focused on creating a welcoming and playful experience that encourages curiosity and learning.

The interaction design emphasised speed, simplicity, and clear navigation. I structured the interface to guide users naturally through the experience, using hierarchy, contrast, and visual direction to support decision-making. Special attention was given to empty states, ensuring that moments without content still communicated purpose and next steps.

To improve user feedback and engagement, I implemented a micro-interaction animation that responded to user actions. This provided clarity, reduced uncertainty, and made the experience feel more dynamic and rewarding.

Challenge :

The main challenge was balancing aesthetics and usability for a young and diverse audience. Designing for a public setting meant that the interface needed to work without prior explanation or onboarding.

Another challenge was creating meaningful motion rather than decorative animation. The micro-interaction had to support user understanding and reinforce system feedback, while maintaining performance and avoiding distraction.

Summary :

This project strengthened my skills in visual hierarchy, interaction design, and feedback systems. I gained experience designing empty states, guiding user attention, and using motion to improve clarity and engagement.

Most importantly, it deepened my understanding of how interface design can shape behaviour and support independent learning, which continues to influence my approach to UX and behaviour-driven design.
