Problem :
Music is deeply personal, yet it is also one of our favorite things to share with friends. However, standard year-end music reviews (like Spotify Wrapped) are static, isolated experiences. There was no interactive way for friends to directly compare their musical identities, bridge the gap between different streaming platforms, or visually explore the deeper audio characteristics—such as track energy or emotional vibe—that define and differentiate their daily listening habits.
Solution :
During my Information Design minor, our team developed "Ritmische Rivaliteit" (Rhythmic Rivalry), an interactive data visualization platform. The application allows two friends to log in using their preferred music streaming platform, instantly importing their listening data. The platform then generates a dynamic, side-by-side visual comparison of their musical profiles. We visualized key insights ranging from top artists to deep-dive audio metrics, transforming raw user data into an engaging and competitive social experience.
Challenge :
The primary challenge lay in data abstraction and complex visual storytelling. We had to take highly technical audio features—such as energy, danceability, happiness, acousticness, instrumentalness, and liveness—and visualize them in an intuitive, engaging way for everyday users. Furthermore, we needed to seamlessly map global geographical data to show where their favorite artists are most popular, while simultaneously generating dynamic word clouds to represent the overarching themes and lyrics in their music.
Summary :
"Ritmische Rivaliteit" successfully turned abstract music metrics into a captivating visual narrative. By combining API integration with advanced frontend data visualization techniques, we created a platform that lets friends playfully clash over their music tastes. This project perfectly demonstrates my ability to take multi-layered datasets and design a clean, user-centric dashboard that balances rich information density with a fun, interactive user experience.
